Felt, by contrast, is one of the oldest forms of textile material. It is not woven. It is made by directly compacting wool fibers using heat, moisture and pressure. The result is a homogeneous non-woven material with no visible structure, valued for its versatility and ease of shaping. It is widely used in crafts, design and industrial applications, but does not offer burel's acoustic, thermal and water-resistant properties. While felt is uniform, burel has depth, tension and a distinct material identity.

What Is the Difference?
At first glance, burel and felt may appear similar. Both are made from wool, both undergo felting and both are known for their durability. Yet the technical, structural and cultural differences between these two materials run deep.

Burel is closely connected to its territory and to mountain life, especially in Serra da Estrela. Production begins with carding the wool, followed by spinning and weaving on a loom to create a defined textile structure. Only then is the fabric subjected to intensive fulling, which shrinks the weave, closes the pores and gives it unique technical properties: natural water resistance, high acoustic and thermal insulation, excellent mechanical strength and a compact yet lively texture.
This dual nature - woven first, then fulled - is what distinguishes burel.
